Trump's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies represent an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true challenge confronting Europe is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% growth for the EU. During this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Question

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in Europe.

This gap prompts a vital issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe stand? Most analysts concede it is essentially a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among 27 separate systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
