Defense Department Report Finds Defense Secretary Placed Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Signal Chat.

A long-awaited Department of Defense report has determined that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by disclosing secret information in a Signal messaging chat, as stated by a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Event

The online conversation in question contained details about a scheduled air attack in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This discussion was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a participant.

Other officials in the chat allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available messaging app that was not approved for handling classified information.

Serious Threat to Troops

The internal investigation found that the intelligence shared by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the safety of US service members if it had been obtained by a hostile nation.

Notably, the document acknowledged that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the material he distributed, though it was unclear whether he formally exercised that authority.

Secretary's Response

The informed individual said that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed information that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the operation. He added that he possessed the authority to downgrade information and viewed the inspector general to be partisan.

Future Actions

The completed report has been provided to Congress. An unclassified version is anticipated to be made public later this week.
