Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
